With many years under its belt filling shoeboxes and three years experience with their annual Shoebox Packing Party, OCC mission leaders at Christ Church felt led to participate at the next level in 2013. For the first time, the facility served as an official Relay Center, offering a drop-off location for individuals, churches, and organizations in the community.
The more than 150 participants of the Friday night Shoebox Packing Party filled more shoeboxes than ever, topping out at 520. They were filled with a balanced variety of donated toys, school supplies, toiletries, clothing, stuffed animals, and more. On top of those, the church family donated more than 100 shoeboxes filled at home.
The Relay Center was more popular than anticipated, and the team ran out of supplied shipping cartons two times! A total of 163 cartons containing 2,615 were loaded onto the truck on Monday along with 178 loose shoeboxes.
This makes a grand total of 2,793 shoeboxes to come and go through the doors of Christ Church!
People were bringing shoeboxes all afternoon on the final Monday with the final 20 coming in at 5:00 p.m. as the truck was pulling into the driveway for the second load of shoeboxes. They just made it.
Nearly 2,800 children around the world will experience the love of Jesus and the joy of Christmas thanks to all those who donated supplies, packed shoeboxes, gave of time and energy, and offered up their leadership skills during the past month. A special thanks goes out to Wanda and David Routier for heading up the initiative this year.
